She bent down, picking up the last of her boxes. She’d not even finished moving in, there were still boxes left unpacked, but now she was moving again. This time she was moving in with her boyfriend, all the way in Australia. She went to leave when she noticed an envelope still on the floor. She picked it up opening.
It’s me, well, you I guess. Our teachers are making us write this letter to our eighteen year old selves and I didn’t really want to do it, but Sophie said it would be a good idea because then I can look back and see if I made it. Did I? Did we make it? Are you a world famous singer in a band? Are you and Sophie still best friends, because I promised her we would be and I don’t want to break that promise.
If we’re not in a world famous band then please don’t give up. We’ll make it one day I promise, and Sophie promises too and we need to make it happen, if not for us then for her because she needs it. We need it too. Are you still writing songs? I hope you are. Even if you aren’t famous I hope you’re still writing songs because they make you so happy. Just please don’t give up? It’s our dream, and no matter what happens keep fighting for it because as Sophie says “the best things in life are always worth fighting for.” I think she just steals these quotes, but mum says she’s ‘wise for her age’ and I’m not really sure what that means, but I think it means we should listen to her. So, keep fighting because we love music and music is worth fighting for. Whatever happens, I believe in you.
If we are famous then well done, you’re my hero. You’re my hero anyway, because if you’re reading this then it means you’ve at least lived till eighteen and this boy’s brother killed himself the other week because he was so stressed, so if you’re reading this then you’re still my hero because you’re still alive and I know that means you’re strong. If we are famous though are we touring with Green Day? Sophie says that all the best bands need to tour with Green Day. I hope we’re famous, and ohh do we have a pretty boyfriend? Is he famous too? He should be. I hope we made it, because I know we deserve it. I am so proud of you. I don’t really know what else I am supposed to say, but if you’re reading this, thank you. Please don’t forget you’re your own hero and Sophie says that everyone should be their own hero, and well you’re mine.
Me Aged 7
P.S I like the name Alaska for a band, and so does Sophie!
She found herself slumped on the floor, tears in her eyes. “Hey, what’ wrong?” came Calum’s voice. She’d taken too long and he’d began to get worried. She handed him the letter and his eyes scanned over it. “This is adorable. You were adorable. You are adorable. Is this what I missed out on?” he laughed, pulling her into a hug.
“I don’t even remember writing it, but it was just what I needed.” She sighed into his neck. “It just reminded me why I’m doing this, and that I love music.” with everything that had been happening since being on tour with One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer she had almost forgot why she wanted to be in a band in the first place, but after reading that letter everything came back to her. She loved music. She loved writing it and performing it. It made her happy, it was what she loved to do. Getting on stage every night with her best friend and performing, it was what she was born to do and nothing could ever beat that feeling.
“You’re my hero too.” Calum beamed, “I mean it, not many people could do what we do and you do it so well and you handle everything so much better than the rest of us, and you save lives. The music you write, it saves people and because of that you’re my hero.” She began to shake as she sobbed onto Calum.
“I love you.” she whispered, her nose was runny and there were mascara marks all down her face but despite this she couldn’t help but blush at the way Calum looked at her, like she was the most beautiful girl in the world. The way she imagined Gatsby looked at Daisy.
“I love you too, beautiful.”
